Irrigation Specialist

 

General Summary:

The Irrigation Specialist is primarily responsible for the irrigation management of all properties owned or managed by Tavistock Development Company (TDC) as well as HOA and CDD areas within Lake Nona.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinates, inspects, and performs basic adjustments and repairs to ensure proper maintenance of irrigation systems
  • Monitors irrigation alarms daily and reports issues to landscape/irrigation contractor responsible for the area  
  • Creates and maintains a monthly watering schedule for all irrigation zones with an emphasis on plant health and water conservation measures
  • Supervises vendor activities and verifies work is in compliance with our developer landscape maintenance specifications and proper horticulture standards
  • Evaluates changes to watering requirements as plants mature and reduces irrigation as appropriate
  • Responsible for understanding and implementing applicable water regulations and restrictions imposed by the City of Orlando
  • Ensures plants that are not irrigated, such as in planters, receive appropriate water as needed
  • Makes recommendations for future irrigation controller replacement, irrigation head upgrades, or other necessary improvements
  • Meets with Project Managers before and after project completion for system operation testing
  • Ensures that each new construction project caps off irrigation correctly and provides a temporary reroute of irrigation until project completion
  • Documents all irrigation damages and ensures repairs are made by the appropriate parties prior to project completion
  • Attends predevelopment meetings to ensure irrigation plans are in line with Lake Nona standards and will meet the needs of specified plant materials
  • Understands landscape plans and specifications for a wide array of project types
  • Inspects newly installed irrigation systems and attends punch list walks during project close out
  • Shuts off irrigation in the event of an emergency
  • Performs periodic testing of zones to ensure optimal system operation
  • Performs monthly inspections of master valves to ensure optimal operation
  • Maintains a log of all newly installed trees to ensure trees receive adequate watering during the first year and ensures that bubblers are disengaged and guy wires are removed after one year
  • Delegates city reclaimed irrigation reports to the appropriate contractor and collects them upon completion
  • Reviews Contractors monthly irrigation reports
  • May perform occasional light landscaping work including but not limited to removing dead plants, installing new plants, picking up litter, etc.
  • Reviews irrigation water consumptive use and adjust systems to meet Lake Nona’s natural resource conservation goals and seasonal needs through on line computer based controls and adjustments
  • Assists in the development of the annual landscaping and operating budgets and effectively work within the budget framework
  • Perform various administrative duties relative to the position
  • All other duties as assigned

 Essential Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in irrigation management or landscape maintenance required
  • A bachelor’s degree in Irrigation Technology, Landscape Management or other related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in managing and troubleshooting irrigation controllers. Working knowledge of Rain Bird IC System Field Control Systems preferred.
  • MS Word, Outlook and Excel required
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and be insurable for automobile insurance with company’s auto insurance carrier
  • Flexibility for on call responsibilities on a 24/7 basis
  • Extensive knowledge of Central Florida plant material and current irrigation systems is required
  • Experience in working in active operating properties and scheduling services accordingly
  • Ability to communicate in English effectively with other individuals
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to maintain good relations with employees, supervisors and contractors

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Must be in good physical condition to perform above job duties as outlined above.  Duties require long periods of standing, kneeling, squatting, bending and lifting requirements of up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to navigate through rough and uneven terrain
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions
  • Must have ability to work in hot, humid, and muggy conditions on continuous basis
