Horticulture Specialist 

General Summary: The Horticulture Specialist is primarily responsible for plant health and implementing the Tavistock Development Company (TDC) vision for utilizing landscaping to create experiential environments for residents, landowners, employees, and guests.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Reviews landscape plans and specifications to enforce compliance to TDC landscape standards and vision
  • Infuses landscapes with plants that create experiential environments (scents, colors, textures, visual appearance)
  • Monitors vendor activities and verifies work is in compliance with our landscape design and maintenance specifications and proper horticulture standards
  • Evaluates changes to watering requirements as plants mature and coordinates with Water Management Specialist to reduce irrigation as appropriate
  • Responsible for understanding and implementing applicable landscape regulations and restrictions imposed by the City of Orlando
  • Inspects new installations for compliance to approved designs and rejects plant materials that do not meet specifications, including health and attends punch list walks during project close out
  • Keeps track of landscape warranties and inspects landscapes during warranty periods
  • Documents pre-construction conditions and holds contractors accountable for damages to landscaping caused during construction
  • Oversees overall health of trees, palms, and shrubs
  • Investigates and addresses plant health issues with strong focus on high value assets (trees and palms)
  • Oversees structural maintenance pruning of trees, palms, and shrubs
  • Attends predevelopment meetings to ensure landscape plans are in line with TDC standards and plant materials will support the needs of the project vision
  • Understands landscape and irrigation plans and specifications for a wide array of project types
  • Maintains a log of all newly installed trees to ensure trees receive adequate watering during the first year and ensures that bubblers are disengaged and guy wires are removed after one year (or when appropriate)
  • Reviews Contractors monthly landscape reports
  • Perform light landscaping work including but not limited to pruning, planting flowers, removing dead plants, installing new plants, picking up litter, etc.
  • Assists in the development of the annual landscaping and operating budgets and effectively works within the budget framework
  • Inspects damage after storms
  • Performs various administrative duties relative to the position
  • All other duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in horticulture management required with strong understanding of all plant types that grow in the region
  • A bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Management or other related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • ISA Board Certified Master Arborist is preferred
  • MS Word, Outlook and Excel required
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and be insurable for automobile insurance with company’s auto insurance carrier
  • Flexibility for on call responsibilities on a 24/7 basis
  • Extensive knowledge of Central Florida plant material and irrigation systems is required
  • Experience in working in active operating properties and scheduling services accordingly
  • Ability to communicate in English effectively with other individuals
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to maintain good relations with employees, supervisors and contractors

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Must be in good physical condition to perform above job duties as outlined above. Duties require long periods of standing, kneeling, squatting, bending and lifting requirements of up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to navigate through rough and uneven terrain
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions
  • Must have ability to work in hot, humid, and muggy conditions on continuous basis
