Assistant Controller

General Summary: The Assistant Controller is primarily responsible for performing general accounting and bookkeeping functions to support company operations and customer service. They must have a good knowledge of accounting principles, be organized and able to carry out tasks autonomously and collaboratively.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Oversee all aspects of the general ledger
  • Assist in the creation and/or application of various internal controls and procedures that align with established best practices
  • Assist in preparation and consolidation of financial statements, budgets, forecasts and business plans. This includes creating financial statements regarding cash flow, income, taxes, earnings, inventory and assets/investments. Review account detail for accuracy and clarity
  • Preparation, adjusting and closing of journal entries as required
  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial statements
  • Help in the development of reports to track company performance against key performance indicators
  • Prepare quarterly bonus and monthly commission reports
  • Ensure vendor accounts are correct and maintained
  • Process security monitoring billing and payments
  • Follow-up on any collection issues and expired credit cards
  • Process Accounts Payable ensuring vendors are paid in a timely manner.  Perform account reconciliations
  • Ensure vendors comply with Certificates of Insurance policies
  • Invoice commercial proposals and calculate % complete journal entries
  • Prepare accounts receivable aging report and take action to resolve any issues
  • Analyze and report on price/cost variances
  • Participate in annual audit by servicing as a liaison to auditing firm
  • By utilizing the company’s accounting system, identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances
  • Work with commercial management team to ensure timely and accurate project proposals and cost estimates
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or business or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years’ experience in an accounting role. Construction or real estate development sectors preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting etc.)
  • Proficiency with MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks required
  • Exceptional computer skills, with the ability to quickly learn new software and reporting packages
  • Ability to properly organize and prioritize tasks
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally
  • Proven ability to deliver superior customer service
  • Strong work ethic; team player with a contagious positive energy
  • Ability to communicate in English effectively verbally and in writing

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Must be in good physical condition to perform above job duties as outlined above
  • Must be physically able to sit and use the computer for hours at a time
